Jagrins Music Publication and the Ohio Brass Arts Festival (hosted by the Central Ohio Brass Band) have once again teamed up to sponsor a composition contest for the 2009 Ohio Brass Arts Festival.

Composers wishing to compete are asked to compose an original slow melody piece for traditional British-style brass band. The slow melody should be based on a folksong or hymn and should be 3-5 minutes in duration. The three finalists will recieve cash prizes, with a top cash prize of $300. The three finalists will be premiered by the Repertoire Band on Friday, March 13th, 2009 at Weigel Hall, The Ohio State University. Additionally, to qualify for any of the prizes, you agree to Jagrins Music Publications publishing your piece.

Entries are due by Saturday, January 31, 2009 and can be e-mailed to entrants@ohiobrassbands.com. Preferred submission format is a Sibelius file, if you need to enter via another method, please contact the Ohio Brass Arts Festival.

Q: What is the instrumentation for a traditional British-style brass band?
A: 1-soprano cornet (Eb), 4-solo cornets (Bb), 1-repiano cornet (Bb), 2-second cornets (Bb), 2-third cornets (Bb), 1-flugel (Bb), 1-solo horn (Eb), 1-first horn (Eb), 1-second horn (Eb), 1-first baritone (Bb), 1-second baritone (Bb), 1-solo trombone (Bb), 1-second trombone (Bb), 1-bass trombone (bass clef), 2-euphoniums (Bb), 2-Eb basses, 2-Bb basses, percussion. All brass parts are in treble clef (except for bass trombone).

Q: What do I do if I do not have Sibelius?
A: For the intial applicaiton process a score in pdf format and a recording (mp3, wav, mid, etc,,,) will suffice. The recording may be (and if it is an original piece really should be) a computer generated recording. If your pieces is a finalist we will need parts either as pdf (8.5"x11" letter format, not A4) or as a midi file that can be read by Sibelius for printing. Parts need to be printed for the Repertoire Band to perform the finalist on Friday March 13th, 2008. Should the finalists be choosen to be published, arrangements will need to be made with Jagrins.
